FOLKVANG Puppy Application Form

The questions in this application have two purposes. The first is to give you a strong sense of my priorities as a breeder in terms of what I look for in potential homes, and the second is to provide me with insight into whether or not I can make a compatible match between you and a current or future puppy. Making the best possible match between human(s) and dog is one of the most important aspects of my breeding program. Please be aware that FOLKVANG requires potential placements to commit to positive reinforcement, aversive-free training and welfare practices. I strongly recommend you find a clicker based class to take the puppy to.

Puppies at FOLKVANG are raised using the protocols created in Puppy Culture. Potential homes are encouraged to familiarize themselves with Puppy Culture and its philosophies.

All litters will have been raised using practices that prime the puppies to be enthusiastic learners in a reward-based system. If you have any questions or would like to know more about our rearing and training philosophies, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Additionally, please know that FOLKVANG will not place two puppies from the same litter in the same household at the same time, nor will we place puppies in houses with dogs currently under eighteen months of age. We will arrange for you to meet dogs from this breed of varying ages, to make sure you understand their needs.

Please start by entering your contact details.

Q0: Why are you interested in the breed?

Q1: Have you owned and raised a dog before?

Q2: If you have owned and raised a dog(s) before, tell me about it. What challenges did you face, and how did you work through them? What breed/ how long did it live/ what type of training did you do.

Q3: Why are you interested in a puppy from FOLKVANG and/or a puppy from this litter?

Q4: Please describe your ideal puppy in terms of temperament. Are you interested in a male or female puppy? Do you have preferences for appearance in terms of coat colour and length? Are these preferences flexible?

Q5: What does a typical day look like in your household? Please describe how you see a FOLKVANG puppy fitting into your schedule? What about an adult dog?

Q6: Are there aspects of your life that would cause a FOLKVANG to be alone for extended periods of time (4+ hours)? This might include work-related responsibilities, travel, and hobby commitments. If your FOLKVANG will be alone for longer than four hours, how will you ensure the dog receives adequate amounts of attention and exercise?

Q7: Where would your FOLKVANG live and sleep? What kinds of access to outdoor spaces are available to you? Will the dog ever be left unsupervised in a garden? If so, in what manner (on a lead, in a kennel, etc.)?

Q8: What kind of dwelling do you reside in? If it is an apartment or flat, how will you ensure your dog receives the proper amount of exercise and enrichment?

Q9: Why are you interested in a puppy from FOLKVANG and/or a puppy from this litter?

Q10: If you rent, do you have permission and proof of permission from a landlord? In the event that you must move dwellings, what would happen in an instance where dog-friendly housing could not be secured?

Q11: Who else resides with you? This can be partners, roommates, children, other pets, or additional family members. Are the other people in your household receptive to bringing home a FOLKVANG puppy? Are the other animals likely to be accepting of a new dog? I will want to meet all dogs and humans.

Q12: How will a FOLKVANG factor into your future plans? These might include having children, relocating, retiring, or travel.

Q13: Who will be the primary caretaker for the dog? What responsibilities are part of being the primary caretaker?

Q14: Have you ever had to rehome or give up a pet? What were the circumstances? In what circumstances would you consider rehoming a FOLKVANG?

Q15: In the event that your FOLKVANG needs to be rehomed, would you agree to letting me have the first right of refusal? Would you also agree not to sell, give away, adopt out, or otherwise rehome the dog without my permission and guidance?

Q16: What is your experience with training dogs, and what is your current training philosophy? Will you commit to learning about positive reinforcement and force-free training methods? What research have you done about what is available in your area?

Q17: FOLKVANG dogs are working bred, and we breed for a strong work ethic. As a result, our puppies do best in homes that make them a big part of the family’s activities and adventures. They need as much, if not more, mental stimulation daily, than exercise. What kinds of activities would you involve your FOLKVANG in? What kinds of training facilities do you have access to?

Q18: The adult dogs at FOLKVANG receive at least an hour of walking or running, thirty minutes of training, and at least one enriching puzzle toy meal a day. Can you commit to a similar level of stimulation and activity for your FOLKVANG dog?

Q19: The initial cost of raising a puppy is steep, and maintenance care for the life of the dog averages £700/year for examinations, food, training classes and similar. Are you able to afford veterinary care for your FOLKVANG? Would you keep it insured? In the event of an emergency procedure or a costly medical intervention, how will you finance the cost?

Q20: Are you willing to keep in contact with me for the lifetime of the dog, and to alert me to any issues regarding health, temperament, or anything that might impact the dog’s life? Please know that this communication is part of a lifelong support from me and any questions, concerns, or assistance you might have or need. I need owners to tell me if there are health concerns that could impact on my future breeding plans.

Q21: Upon confirmation of placement, you will be required to sign a sales contract that outlines our responsibilities to one another and to the dog, including specifics about housing, training, nutrition, health testing, and breeding. If you intend to breed, you must inform me of this at our first meeting. Does any of this concern you?

Q22: What expectations do you have of me as your breeder?

Q23: Any other questions or concerns? Please feel free to ask me any questions you like about me, my dog philosophies, my breeding program, and my dogs!
